We tend to think of nature as free— easily accessed by all. But we’ve found there are several inhibitors for those who desire spending time in nature, from actually getting there. Case in point, as a teacher huge segments of my students confided they had never visited the ocean when we lived in California, or the mountains for those in Colorado, despite each being in their own respective “backyard”. Mostly it came down to time and money—a luxury not always afforded to families.
Fast forward to Summer 2021 when a friend and I took our kids on their first backpacking trip to Lost Lake near Nederland. We joked that for the amount of money we spent on their new gear for a one-night expedition, we could have booked a week-long all-inclusive vacation. What a privilege to be able to offer this experience to our children. But what about other children and families? We believe cost should NOT be a deterrent from getting outside in God’s glorious creation.
That’s where Trading for Trails tries to fill in as a collective. Need gear for your hike or backpacking trip? We’re here to help by renting it to your for FREE. Or how about a little this-for-that swap? We’re open to that too. And lastly, we’re all here to share the stoke, along with advice or recommendations on gear & trails— Just think of us as your trail-loving friends!
